Introduction to the National Service Scheme
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a fundamental sector Scheme of the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, New Delhi. Popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in Gandhiji’s Centenary year in 1969. NSS is a voluntary association of youth in Colleges, Universities and at the +2 level, to take part in various government-led community service activities & programmes, from time to time. The sole objective of the NSS is to provide hands-on training experience to youth in delivering community service. The objective of this programme is to provide hands-on training experience to youth in delivering community service without any biases. NSS volunteers work to confirm that everyone who is needy gets help to improve their living standard and lead a life of dignity. Thus, we want IIIT Sonepat students and faculty members/staff members to contribute to the development of our country.
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a government-run program in India that aims to provide students with opportunities to engage in community service and develop their leadership skills. The program is open to students in colleges and universities and is run by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
The main objective of NSS is to inculcate the spirit of social service among students and to provide them with an opportunity to work for the welfare of the community. The program is designed to promote volunteerism among students and to create an awareness of the problems faced by society.
The NSS program is divided into two parts: regular activities and special camping programs. Regular activities include weekly meetings, community service, and social service projects. Special camping programs are usually held for a period of 7 days, during which students participate in community service activities such as cleaning, plantation, and health and sanitation programs.
To participate in NSS, students must enroll in the program and attend regular meetings and activities. They are also expected to complete a certain number of hours of community service each year. Upon completion of the program, students are awarded certificates recognizing their participation and service.
The NSS also organizes National Integration Camps (NICs) in order to bring students from different parts of the country together and to promote national integration. Additionally, the scheme also conducts adventure camps, trekking, and leadership training camps to develop the personality of the students.
The NSS is considered to be an important program in India as it helps in the development of a sense of responsibility and concern for the community among young people. It also helps to develop leadership skills, teamwork, and a sense of social responsibility in students.

The motto of National Service Scheme is “NOT ME BUT YOU”, this reflects the spirit of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service. The NSS logo has been based on the Rath Wheel of the Konark Sun temple, Orissa, India. The colour red and blue in the NSS logo provides motivation to the NSS youth volunteers to be active & energetic towards nation-building social activities. However, the wheel represents the cycle of conception and conservation for continuity as well as change and suggests the continuous striving of NSS for social change. |
